I just got back from a 2,000 mile drive up to Kansas and back, through a lot of small towns. When I got home, I googled some of the towns I went through, and found out things I wish I had known before I left, except for the fact that the trip was somewhat random, and I had no idea what places I'd go through.
For example, I found out after I got home that Quanah, Texas, was the site of a shootout between two feuding lawmen (a Texas Ranger and a county sheriff) which nearly killed both of them. Fascinating stuff.
The reason I opened this thread, is because I took a wrong turn in Ringwood, Oklahoma, and wound up going through Ames, but I did not notice there is a unique and fascinating geological museum in Ames, the site of an ancient meteor crater that exposed vast quantities of gas an oil.
I found out something new by googlng where I'd been.
Yes, I Google some before and some after. Before has helped a lot - using street view to be sure I'd know when to get off a bus from the train station was a real time saver - no way would I have known just from the minimal info the hotel site provided. Googling afterwards is mixed for me, though - especially if it's an area I'm not likely to return to anytime soon but I just found out something that would have been cool to know while I was there.
I may be driving around Kansas for a couple weeks for work..... anything cool?
