There's so much more to Europe than just Italy...it almost seems like the cliche American tourist destination.
Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Greece, etc., have so much to see as well. Does anybody else also think Italy is uber predictable?
Who cares what is predictable and where people want to go? What matters is where they want to go and what they are interested in.
I think Italy seems like a really cool place to visit, and if that's where they want to go, then they shouldn't have to go to a different country to not appear "predictable"

Well, I think , for one , most people have a limited travel budget or amount of vacation time so they are forced to narrow it down to the place they want to see "the most" -even though you are correct that many other countries have interesting worthwhile things to see and do....
Maybe -it's because more people study or learn about Roman History in school so they are more interested in visting those places?
Maybe it's a "keeping up with the Jones" thing? That's where they think everyone else would like to go? Or you meet more people who have already been so you get more "you just have to go......"
Maybe it's the perception of "perfect weather"? I live in San Diego - a nearly flawless climate IMO I meet lots of people when I travel that want to come here because of our weather....
Maybe its because when I think of movies that take place in Italy - its The Talented Mr Ripley, Roman Holiday, etc.... thrillers, romantic movie, and movies that "star" the scenery....
I think alot of Americans don't like to get outside their comfort zone too much either.... so I think they like the idea of visting a place where they feel like they already know the social rules, or English is likely to be spoken and the food recognizable?

That X became overused doesn't mean the underlying reasons for the popularity of X disappear.
Italy= great food, great art, great architecture, great traveling infrastructure, great variety in topography,
and (especially as it applies to the infrequent traveler) the highest number of opportunities for experiences
that can/will lead to topics of conversation with friends based in common experience upon their return home.

You forgot warmer weather.
I rarely think of Italy yet I visit there about once a year. I live in Germany and travel quite a bit. I was camping in France just last week.
Why does it matter to anyone where someone else wants to travel?

Scandinavia, or rather, Nordic countries: With cheaper than cheap airfares, millions of Americans have "discovered" Iceland every year in the last five years.
