I've been watching the fares on Bing travel for the last month and they've remained very high with only very small fluctuations. So when is the cheapest time to buy airfare for the holidays?

Last year I remember the fairs dropping pretty close to the holidays. I had a friend that saved 80 bucks on almost the exact same trip I booked months before. Is that drop going to happen again this year?

I booked my flight about 4 weeks ago and that saved me $1000 dollars from the price it is now. The best time to buy was a very long time ago.

3-6 months ago.

Seriously, you better lock in a ticket soon.

Ditto. They won't be getting any cheaper.

I bought my fare to Canada about 6 weeks ago for Thanksgiving travel and during the past time it has only gone up sharply, by about $200. Fares overall seem to be HIGH!

I wanted to go to Cabo San Lucas in Jan 2012 from LAX, last time I went in Jan, couple years ago, I paid $300 roundtrip, this time when checking the asking price is like $600, for a 45 min flight? Geezus! No thanks!

The interesting thing is that I could cross the border to Tijuana and then take a flight to La Paz (Baja) - about 2hrs north of Cabo, about the same flying time, on discount carrier Volaris for only $200 so why does the US carrier charge $400 more for the same?

It can depend on your destination.
There is a fare war going on now and you might be able to pull out a deal.
We bought our tickets in June (for December/January travel), but our ticket is into France and out of Spain and we did not want to deal with that at the last minute.

It depends on where you're going and what dates you're planning to travel. For instance, I can book a roundtrip airfare from Hilo, Hawai'i to L.A. leaving on December 22 and returning on January 2 for $746. However, if do the opposite and go from L.A. to Hilo instead on those dates, the roundtrip airfare is $1,731.
