In response to the thread "Places you were disappointed by".... how about places that you went to (maybe not even intended to visit) that you were not disappointed by and most pleasantly surprised by - exceeding your expectations? Even little out of the way places.
Every year we drive from the north to Florida, last couple of years we've been making a bit of a vacation out of the drive itself, Savannah and Charleston were a very nice surprise in the quaint old south flavor of their historic districts..
Nebraska was our 49th state. The ONLY reason that we went there was that we were heading to South Dakota and Omaha was a cheaper flight. There are a LOT of great things to do in the state - the sand hills, all the museums, quaint towns. Omaha and Lincoln are fun towns with a lot to see. We have gone back 5-10 times.
South Dakota was really a bust for us. The state toutism people are really MUSH better than Nebraska's.
Nashville was a great surprise. It has an image of being a country music/ rockabilly capital which is valid. However, there is a much wider variety of musical genres and other cultural activities in the area.
Austin gets all the credit for being the "hip place" to go. However, we actually enjoyed all the art museums of Fort Worth.
What is great about travel is that it really helps you to dispel all of the prejudices about places that are perpetuated by Hollywood and TV.
A tiny town in Ohio (I think) whose name I never did find out. We were driving along "old highway 80" (not the superhighway). We found a place where it looked like there was an even older route 80, so we took it, and it went through the main street of a picture-book early 1900's midwest town.
Graceland! I was expecting something super tacky and no fun at all. Whilst the tacky was definitely there it was also a lot of fun and interesting to visit and it was kind of endearing to see this is how the most famous man in the world liked to live.
UAE I would say. I was utterly surprised by what man has created on desert. Irrespective of the weather there's all kinds of games available. Imagine ice skating in the summer? Well that's possible in UAE. Also their buildings are marvelous and a friend recommended me to rent a place rather than stay in a hotel as I had planned a 3 month visit. Moderator cut: see comment Taxis are easily available and fares are affordable. The Dubai museum was amazing and their section of underwater scene was truly amazing it really made me feel I was standing in an ocean. The most amazing fact is that it's all built on desert.

New Mexico...When I was planning a road trip my only reason to pass thru New Mexico was to get from Colorado to Airizona. Was only going to take part of one day. I ended up spending 7 days in New Mexico. I visited just about the entire state. Only missed the Southwest corner of the state.
I'll second Memphis TN. Wasn't a place I ever wanted to go, got stuck there for a day due to airline problems - and had a lot of fun! Lots to do, interesting neighborhoods (not cookie cutter) friendly people, good music - and yes, I even visited Graceland! Haven't been back since that day, but one day I will go there again on purpose!
