While I'm not a sexist, I do feel a little unnerved hopping into a cab driven by a male stranger to an unfamiliar place especially at an ungodly hour and in a foreign country. At the Dubai Airport, there are pink taxis driven by ladies in pink uniforms that are intended for female passengers and families. I love the whole concept! The idea is to prevent sexual harassment from male drivers. The concept is not new and countries like London, The Hague, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Moscow, Cairo, Damascus, Kuwait, Dubai, Tehran, Mumbai, and Dacca have implemented the female-only taxis for several years now.
Do you think this is a safety measure for women or pure gender discrimination?

That is interesting. I did not even know women could drive in those countries. I would pay more for a woman driver, considering the last taxi I took, the guy looked like a meth addict, with tons of tattoos, I felt like he had just been released from Rikers. It was quite scary, especially as I was in an unfamiliar place, with my young daughter, it was at night, and the guy drove some convoluted route down pitch dark streets. I think this is a great idea!

I know exactly what you mean!! I was once in a cab that was driven by a dirty old man who couldn't stop talking about women as sex objects!! Major nightmare!!!

What an interesting concept. I agree with jasper...I'd be glad to pay more for a woman driver.

I like the idea of the pink, but frankly ur taking as much risk driving with a chic as with a guy and maybe more so if she's rattled in traffic.... All that being said for me it is going to be situational. I am not riding with anyone I don't feel comfortable with. Girl Power to the lady cabbies

UAE more Westernized, or at the very least, more willing to tolerate double standards to accommodate Westerners visiting and living there -- there are a things foreigners are allowed to do in UAE that its own citizens are not, such as gamble and drink alcohol. IIRC women can drive in UAE, foreign or not.

At any rate, this is more to accommodate their own sensibilities (unrelated men and women should not be alone together) than the sensibilities of foreigners. By contrast, Western society errs on the side of equal treatment over double standards, even if the latter might make more sense in some cases. We don't tolerate discrimination on the basis of sex unless there is a very compelling reason for it, and a woman's personal comfort isn't a compelling reason. Therefore, since cabbies have to pick up men and women, and men are far more likely to present a danger to the driver than women, very few women are willing to take the risk of being a cabbie. So about 99% of cabbies here in the Western world will be men, and that's just how it goes.
