I've read and heard about the airport security search, X-ray etc., and was anticipating being asked to opt between X-ray and strip search when I made a domestic travel recently, but I didn't seen anything like that. Has anyone here been subject to such treatment? Maybe only when something in your body/clothing sets off an alarm? Just curious...

I have flown out of LAX, DFW and Lafayette (LA) airports without encountering any X-Ray screenings or body searches ... Until I left JFK and got into the X-RAY scanner ... It took a few seconds longer than the metal detector and I wasn't thrilled but did not protest due to being exhausted and ready to get home.

From personal experience the full x-ray lets the agent see nothing more than "blips" on a generic human form. It does not show your body parts..

Surely I meant to say pat-down search, not strip search!

Yeah, unfortunately many times. You can opt out, but most of the times to get the "hands on pat and scan " means that you have to wait aside till everyone is scanned. If the line is long and you are in a hurry, forget it. For me it looks like "punishment" for those who dare to opt out the x-ray scan...

I was patted down by armed Polezi at the Nurnberg, Germany airport back in 1970. And, I was wearing my US Army dress green uniform! There have been other places where similar things happened, including being pulled aside for questioning, and the presence of armed troops or police in airports has been commonplace for years.

This all is really nothing new to the rest of the world. It's only since 9/11 that American's have had to deal with it and we think it's something strange.

I've been both x-rayed and patted down. Neither was a big deal.

I've been x rayed and patted down a bunch of times and don't care. If you have a problem with this then I feel sorry for you.. Really.

My husband has a metal hip and so he has had to go through a pat down every time. He actually prefers the x-ray machine that lets him avoid that process (it's more time consuming than anything). I went through the Xray machine in SFO recently and it was no big deal.

Seldom in the USA have I gotten a pat-down search except when the equipment was funky and caused problems. The x-ray isn;t a big deal at all and sometimes its actually faster than waiting for the metal detectors when family hoards are jamming up the lines.

outside the USA, this is more much more common and way more accepted and few (mostly americans) complain.
