Is it possible to travel Latin America alone without knowing Spanish and Portuguese? Just curious.

There are some areas in South America (outside of Brazil) that it will be very hard to manage without knowledge of at least some basic phrases in Spanish.

The worlds business is done in English - everywhere. But, it all depends where you are going. Hoping on planes and taxis from one toursit destination and western hotel to another? No problem. On the other hand, this isn't Europe where it seems that the locals all speak better english than you. Taking local buses and visiting local markets, nightclubs, resteraunts, outside of the tourist areas, etc - then yeah you might have some problems and will need at least some rudimentary language skills.

Yes learning basic phrases doesn't take too long. When are you travelling? Start practicing at least a month in advantage, memorising basic words and phrases and practicing every day. If you have any friends who can speak Spanish ask them to help you out.
