I've been lucky (AND careful). But I was in San Diego vacationing solo when these two guys wanted my nice camera. They didn't say anything (I don't think they knew enough English) but they made gestures for me to hand it over, and I went into a screaming fit. I'd been at Balboa Park all day doing museums, I was tired and cranky, and these a--holes thought I was going to just fork over my camera. I would have thrown it onto the ground into pieces first before giving it to them. But I was making such a spectacle that the people waiting for the trolley started yelling at them to leave me alone, so they left. They didn't get my camera.

I'm sure I'm a hard one to pick-pocket. Though I use smaller purses that convert from criss-cross to fannypak, my i.d. and credit cards are always in a hidden area elsewhere.

Before I went to Rome I read all the stories regarding pick pockets in that city. So when I went I wore a money belt like travel books always advised. What I also did was but some cheap wallets at the dollar store and filled them with monopoly money. One night on the way back from the Trevi fountain I found my fake wallet missing. I never felt a thing.

I've had times when someone has tried to make me a victim. One tried to sexually assault me and ended up with a broken nose and three cracked ribs in Minneapolis. I'll bet he won't try that again. B@st@rd.

We had a pair of Gypsies try to rob us in broad daylight in front of a large hotel in Rome last summer. We were on to them before they were within 10 feet of us, and it didn't end well for them. They were lucky we were in a foreign country, or they would have taken a beating for what they were trying to pull.
