I will be tight, but if the airline let you book it as a connected ticket then its 'legal' C4 is at the end of the Concourse, D11 is few gates from the middle (you enter the concourses in the middle)
Just keep moving. Check the boards for where your flight will be departing from they do change gates from time to time.
If you have lots of time
You can ( No recommended if you are in a hurry ) walk from concourse to concourses there is some art along the way. There is a walkway (with moving sidewalks) in the transportation mall ( underground between the PlaneTrains) tubes.
Is anyone here really familiar with ATL terminal C and D? I have an airtran flight coming in on D11 and leaving out of C4...heres the catch my flight lands at 815 and my connection leaves at 850 is anyone familiar enough to tell me how long of a walk that is???

I just flew out of Terminal D last night. I walked from Terminal A all the way to D46 (which is at the end of Terminal D). Yes, I had time to kill.
Terminal D to C isn't a bad. If you walk quickly, take the escalator, walk the long hallway, back up the escalator, it'll be about 10 minutes. Plus your gates are close to the main walkway which helps. If you're running late just hop on the tram, that'll save you a little time. Your connection seems a little tight so I'd probably take the tram.
Check the monitors as soon as you're off the plane and make sure your gate didn't change, that happens alot in Atlanta.
If you have an option for a longer layover I would recommend it. Atlanta has plenty of bars and restaurants. 36 minutes is tight. That said if you can get on the next flight, you are time ahead if it works, and not out anything if it does not.
Coming in from Augusta you will land at the far end of the airport and will have to go to another concourse, unless you are going only one concourse, usually it's faster to take the train.
I had a 36 minute difference last month. When I deplaned I was told that we missed that flight (though it had not yet left) and had been booked on the next flight. We walked around, had lunch and then made the next flight. I would want an hour or so.
Anything under two hours unless its the same airline and the gates are literay beside eachother. I have been in airports were there is a 3 mile road journey between terminals eg minneapolis.
i have to use a cane to get around for stability.. I am hoping that when I get to the Atlanta airport flying from Bloomington il to san Antonio with an hour layover in Atlanta.. but I am hoping that I can get some assistance with getting to the correct gate to get to my connecting flight.. "worried"

Arrange for a wheelchair with the airline in advance.

Yep. Call the airline and tell them you need wheelchair assistance at your layover point. Someone will be waiting on the jetbridge when you get off your first flight.
Any connection under 45 minutes to an hour is too tight IMHO. With such a short window time that OP mentions they will need to practically run from the time they exit the first plane to get to the gate of the second plane.
