Hmm, interesting about Miami.
Last month our flight to France was delayed out of MIA, it was the first international flight I'd ever been on that had more than a half hour delay.
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that IAH is the only airport in the US to fly non stop to every continent. I would probably go with JFK, LAX or ORD. I read that ATL airport has the highest amount of traffic in the world..
Yeah remember, a lot of Miami's international flights are shorter trips that their domestic ones
Remember, now Canada also counts as international destination and there's a lot of flights from JFK to Canada, especially Toronto and Montreal.
Top 5 I'd say:
Miami (Carribean destinations give it the nod over JFK)
JFK
LAX (Asia and Asia-Pacific)
Chicago O-Hare
Atlanta (pretty much only Delta out of ATL)
Not a direct flight or even the same plane gets you to Australia so that doesn't work either. The only airport that has a direct flight to every continent in the US (other than Antarctica) would be DFW.

Qantas operates a direct flight from JFK. It stops to refuel in LA, but it's the same plane from New York to Sydney. There is a difference between "direct" and "non-stop."

Its not a non stop because it refuels in LA, but if you take that Qantas flight from New York to Sydney, its the same plane with a refueling stop. Same as the South African flight from Johanesburg to JFK with stops to refuel in Dakar, the Sydney Heathrow Qantas flight which stops in Singapore to refuel, and the Virgin flight from Sydney-heathrow which makes Hong Kong a refueling stop.
Also, the only airports in the US, IIRC that fly direct to Africa are: JFK, ATL, IAD and I think IAH has a United to Lagos.

Boston also has direct flights to Africa via TACV to Cape Verde.
And yes, Houston has a nonstop flight to Lagos thru United Airlines.
