I usually leave the greater Chicago area about once every two to three months. Most times I fly sometimes I drive. Last time I left the area was in August when I flew down to Atlanta for a family reunion. I'll be heading to Alabama this Thanksgiving and Christmas, and I'll be spending New Year's Eve in New York. So i get around a decent bit. Also, I fly down to Orlando every year for business and I also travel to professional development conferences held once a year in different cities nationwide. This year the conference was in Philadelphia, where I traveled in April; in 2008 I'll be heading out to Las Vegas (never been there, can't wait to experience it).
So in all I would say that I travel out of town maybe 5-6 times a year. A decent amount, but I know some people here in Chicago who travel out of town every week. Now that's just a little bit too much. I would feel like I was wasting my rent money every month if I spent that much time on the road. You're basically living out of a suitcase when you travel that much.
For vacation, I usually take two 2-week trips abroad each year (over the past few years, it has been 2 weeks in Asia and 2 weeks in Latin America). I also take 2-3 long weekend trips a year.
For business, I stopped traveling for my work about 3 years ago. (It was quality of life decision.)
I cant afford to travel as much as I would like as a single mom. Although I am trying to change that. I am planning a big trip to Seattle next summer. Has always been a place to go before I die type of thing. I have no idea why. A cruise and Disney world are also on my agenda. Disney is just on hold as I feel my son is too young to appreciate it. He is only 5. It will be much better when he is 8 or 9.
Visiting Boston as a 3 or 4 day trip is also in the works. Cant imagine what it would be like to catch a game at Fenway Park.
We usually travel 3 times a year or more to Spain or other countries in Europe, we make at least 1 long visit to the US to visit family though. I get employee discount on most major airlines because im a flight dispatcher. Which is good
I travel 2 times a year for work. Then we do 2 long weekend trips per year, typically to Wisconson (we live in Chicago). Then we do 2 vacations to further destinations. Usually places like LA, Miami, Mexico or Europe. So I guess about 6 times? For 2008 our itinerary includes a 4 day trip to Mexico, a 4 day trip to San Diego to visit friends from Chicago who moved there, a long weekend in Austin, TX, a long weekend in Wisconsin, and a 10 day trip to Dubrovnik.
In recent years I have been on average traveling 3 times a year - one business related trip, one volunteering trip and one trip to visit family and relatives.
We're retired so all of our travel is leisure. At least twice a year we take month-long trips and a few shorter ones within the UK or to the continent.
