A friend of mine who lives in Singapore will be visiting the USA this summer with her husband and 2 kids (age 16 and 12) and we have talked about going to the Bahamas for 3 or 4 nights staying at a vacation rental vila that can sleep at least 6 just for some space to spare.
Being that I am single without kids and they are a family of 4, I am curious as to what % I should pay for the vacation rental home? Certainly no more than 50%, but nothing less than 20%, but just how much....again since there is just one of me, but 4 of them.
Additionally, and probably more importantly, in terms of securing the deposit to reserve the place, should they be entirely responsible for doing this (as its more likely they will have to cancel...because there are 4 of them) or should we share that 2 ways to show that we are both equally serious about showing up.
I would pay 1/5 of the charges....rent and deposit. Who is in charge of doing the actual booking and making the other arrangements? These are things I'd discuss before paying any money!
One element left unstated is, who wants to go to the Bahamas? If it was their idea, you can offer to come along, and pay 1/5 of the shared cost. But if you are the one who wants to go to the Bahamas, then you have a larger responsibility, to pay the cost and ask them if they would like to come along and share the costs with you.
In other words, you should pay all the cost of your guests staying at your home, but away from your home, the cost is the responsibility of whomever proposes and controls the trip.
