Should not be illegal at all. This is the United States, if a company wants to charge $1,000 for a bag they can. Don't like it, don't fly them. That is how it works, at least here.
I fly Spirit OFTEN. This does not affect me at all. A small "Day-Pack" type bag is considered a personal item and is thus free.
A round-trip ticket from LAS to OAK on Spirit is $60. I'm not going to b**** about carryon fees when I'm paying that little for a ticket. LAS to FLL (which will get me close enough to home) is $100. Again, who cares about bag fees? I travel light anyway.
agree. spirit is usually the cheapest by far to a lot of destinations i like to go. got a RT from LAS-MDE (including 2 night layover in FLL which i did on purpose) for $293, and BOS-MDE-LAX for $225, and LAX-SDQ for $400 all in the last couple years. prices on other carriers for these routes from the west coast is like $600-800. i just take a small school-style backpack with 3 days worth of clothes and drop my clothes off for laundry every few days. the main problem most ppl have is they bring WAY too much stuff with them on vacation. it's very easy to meet spirits personal item requirement, no reason to bring a carry on.

I agree. You have airline choices, don't fly with the carriers whose policies you don't agree with.

Just wear all your clothes instead of packing them.
Agree with above post, a lot people just pack too much stuff. You can almost always buy clothes if need be and mail them back to yourself. The USPS program makes this an easy choice - "if it fits, it ships".
Have never flown Spirit, probably won't because I am beholden to another airline that gives me perks.

Never flown Spirit but can understand (not necessarily agree with) this policy. Ever since airlines started charging for checked baggage, folks have been overloading the overhead baggage bins with their zillions of carryons, which can delay a plane from taking off. Also, some folks deliberately take their baggage as carryon and when the bins are full, volunteer to check their bags at the gate (free baggage check). I think this price is steep and I was shocked when I read an article about the $100 fees, but if the ticket is a bargain EVEN WITH the carryon fees, then you cannot complain. Personally, I'd just check my bags in and save some moolah if I happen to find myself flying with Spirit.
I flew Spirit once and would do it again. Why should I pay the same as someone who puts something in the overhead? The only extra I paid for was coffee. Can't do without that. The fact is carryons that won't fit under the seat add weight and cost them fuel.
I think the people that care about bag fee's, are the one's with bags. Not everyone travels light, and they might need clothes for where they are going.
Fly somewhere else then. For the people that don't have to complain about everything and bring a million things, we're enjoying the benefits for having round trip flights across the country for under $75.
