Most carriers offer the same or nearly the same prices through their own websites as through the travel websites. (In my experience). So if you don't want to use the travel websites all you need to do is to try all the carriers' websites for all the combinations of departure and return dates. Then pick the lowest.
It's not possible to say anything certain about fares, but (again in my experience) they are unlikely to go DOWN 2 weeks or less before the flight.
If you do not wish to use someone like Travelocity to buy tickets, you can always use their site to compare prices and then go to the actual carriers site to book the flight.
Also, check out Southwest Airlines. You have to go to their site as they do not show up on sites such as Travelocity. On the 3rd I found a round trip for under $200.

Where were you last week when SWA ran the 3 day $89 fare to DEN?
I woud still use them or Frontier. (direct), tho also search on Kayak or hotwire / travelocity
I almost exclusively use SWA, as they will give you full credit for next ticket (if you end up not going). Free changes, free baggage, and quick boarding.
BTW: when I fly to DEN (several x / yr) I take a cooler or 2 of frozen $3/# Salmon / Steelhead and trade it for GOOD beef.
