many universities around the world let rooms during the summer months. Many are downright reasonable.

sometimes you need to be 'Stealth'

Church groups, senior centers, senior newspapers, senior clubs, activity centers, libraries, and YES On LINE. I have a 94 yr old friend who just switched from PC to MAC (mainly for media advantages) and he can run circles around me (has 3 big screen displays in living room, and interfaced to Hard drives with thousands of his pics and interfaced data bases with 5 of his kids). I have several friends in their 90's who daily email and use e-commerce, and SCADS do daily skype and picture sharing with families.

I think you may be 'short' on 'imagination / creativity' to be traveling CHEAPLY around the world. You will certainly be educated AFTER doing that for a few yrs. Doing it WITH kids and / or grandparents is how you REALLY get educated. FAST

Get tip never considered that. I wonder if they would do it anytime during the year as long as they had empty space.

Generally NOT.

I need to elaborate a bit.

What I am talking about are university residence halls that are open to the general public during the summer months (i.e., Carleton University in Ottawa or McGill in Montreal).

There are quite a few universities that offer hotel accommodations - Ohio Northern, Iowa State - but generally those are $100+ a night which is hardly budget. But in those, you are getting a Marriott style hotel room.

Outside the "First World", there is never a problem finding hotels that are safe and comfortable for $20-30 a night, although they might not be in the capital. Any third world or developing country, you can find a suitable hotel room that will give you a weekly rate of around $100. A very nice one for $200 a week, and you don't need to make any advance arrangements, just ask around when you arrive. Another option is tourist resorts in the off season. You might have to privately subscribe to a local internet provider.

Not sure if $300 a month is realistic for a furnished room with utilities. This is the cheap end of California and I rent my spare room/bath for $500, more if they use the kitchen. Not sure what part of the country you'll be in. In the South might be cheaper.

Is there a website other than cragislist/Homeaway (very overpriced) where people post listings for spare rooms. Honestly I wouldn't feel safe leaving all my belongings (like computer, etc) in a strangers house.

Internet connections are not as reliable outside of the "first world" either though. You'd risk arriving somewhere only to find out that you can't get the type of connection you need to do your work, so then you have to use vacation days and spend even more money to quickly get somewhere that you can work from.

To the OP - one thing you might be overlooking are timezones. I have considered doing this since I can work from anywhere with an internet connection as well - so I could easily bounce from hostel to hostel in Europe paying like $30 a night to get a decent room with a good internet connection in most big cities, but the timezones... ugh. My hours would have to be 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM (8:30 AM - 5:00 PM in my real timezone). I don't think that would be very fun. I'd have to get up early to try to do as much as possible before lunch and then spend the "good part" of the day sitting in my room working.

In southeast Asia my hours would be 7:30 PM to 4:00 AM. That would be even worse!

Thanks for the tip. What are you doing now? Have you ever traveled / worked yet?
