Most of the airlines themselves will have e-mail lists for last minute deals. I'd pretty much sign up for the bargains lists for anyone that flies out of MIA or FLL. And keep in mind that if an airline has fares that seem too good to be true, and they aren't advertising those fares, there could be a pricing error that gave you the low fare. If you do manage to originally book the super bargain ticket that no one knows about, keep it on the QT so the airline is less likely to cancel it on you.
Other than those "last minute deals" that you can have the airlines send you, LAST MINUTE DEALS generally do NOT exist. You pay a LOT MORE when you wait to the last minute.
What I generally do when I want to lock in a good rate is to book the best deal on Southwest a few months in advance. If the trip has to be canceled due to personal or business reasons, I can use the flight credit for an entire year WITHOUT a change fee.
