I really want to go to Florida to visit my mom this winter. I have almost an entire month off of classes and work doesn't start until January 14th.
My classes end on the 10th of December.
I have done this drive twice round trip (4 times total). But I was always with other people.
All of my friends are starting their careers so it will be hard for them to go, I pretty much already know they won't be able to come.
I will also be bringing a 10lb dog.
I'm 23, and will pay for everything on my credit cards and pay it off once I start working.
My mother is worried that on the highway I can be easy prey to sex offender types and she even mentioned truckers being dangerous.
I know flying is better but I'm scared of flying and just don't feel ready to do it yet.
Just make sure you have a reliable and road ready car, don't pick up any hitchhikers, travel during the day or only stop at well lit, secured rest stops at night and you should be fine. I've seen plenty of single women on the road during my road trips

I drive a 2008 honda civic with either 43,800 miles or 63,000 miles.

You know one of those "Dangerous TRUCKERS" your Mother mentioned happens to be my Husband and he and all the other Dangerous Truckers I know are the safest, most protective men on the planet especially with women and children. So before you go on about how dangerous one group of people is you need to realize 99% of the truckers on the road are there to make a living and provide for their families not look for girls they can make some sort of sexual prey. IF you ask nicely a trucker will be more than happy to help you with directions, have you follow him with a trucker behind you down the highway to make sure you stay safe, stop with you at a rest area, and will even escort you to the rest area building and back if you are scared.
You are better off staying home where you feel all safe and secure and don't have to worry about all those dangerous truckers who are doing nothing but driving down the road to their next delivery, making their living, minding their own business and looking forward to being home with their family for the weekend AND they are probably delivering everything YOU USE DAILY.

My mother is worried...
Mothers worry. That's their job.
Boston Ft Lauderdale is over 1500 miles on I-95... which is at least 25 hours at the wheel.
Even if you can drive 10 hours per day... that's still two motel stays and 3 days on the road.
(Baltimore Md and Savannah Ga should work well)
Keep your wits about you. Don't drive tired.
Always have at least 1/3 tank of gas and plan your stops.
Gas up (and snack) at one of the BIG national brand stations.
Walk the dog at the BIG "welcome to State X" rest stops until in FL.
(Once in FL the 95 stops are safer than your own neighborhood)
You'll be fine.

These are key. The thing is you don't want to be forced into a situation where you HAVE to stop at some deserted gas station or rest stop. You always want to be in a well lit and populated area when you make a pit stop.

I think as long as you don't attempt to drive through the night, and stay in a reputable hotel with adequate security -- checking in before dark, and don't go into public restrooms in solitary places, you will probably be okay. Chances are pretty good you know how to conduct yourself safely at home -- just practice as safe, or safer while on the road. Don't be alone in places without security near by. Never be so far that someone cannot hear you call for help.
Make sure your car is in good working order, have your tires checked for leaks before you go, and make sure you've gassed up. Don't wait to be low on gas to refill, but refill at crowded stations. Avoid eye contact with lurkers, but make sure you notice what and who is around you.
