I would like to take a day trip to Lille from Paris. I hear the area is beautiful. Has anyone done this? Any recommendations, places to see, restaurants, etc?
I was there in 2004 and found it to be a fascinating city. It had narrow little cobblestone streets that reminded me of paintings of midieval Paris. I loved the North African culture in the city. There were camels walking around in the central marketplace! It's definitely worth a visit if you have the time.
Having lived and studied in Lille this year for 5 months, I'd definitely recommend a trip. It's a beautiful city with lots of things to do. Here's a few if you should choose to go.
-Grand Place- beautiful water fountain, the best of Lille surrounds this area including Vieux Lille (Old Lille) which has great shopping and is charming. You'l l find the Opera and the largest mall in Europe (Euralille) within walking distance.
-Meert on Rue Esquermoise. Famous confectionary and definitely an attraction by itself.
-"La Catho"- or the Universite Catholique on Rue Vauban. Nice college area with affordable food and plenty to see. Check on the Parc Vauban, a large park also on Vauban.
-For the best kebabs in the city, try Kemer, on a side street off Rue Solferino. Delicious!
I am interested in a few day trips from Paris, France to perhaps a wine region. I was looking at Bergerac. Can anyone tell me how to get around from city to city in France other than the train? It seems expensive but if it is my only option then I guess I'll use it. Are there buses or subways that go into the rural areas? How is driving there for Americans? Is there a huge difference? I've been to Paris twice now and whould like to explore something out of the city. Any ideas?
