I'm thinking about taking a trip out to Gulf Shores, the woman wants to go to the beach and I figured I'd just avoid it by playing golf or something. The biggest worry for me is the hotel budget, is it possible to find cheap lodging around there? Have the prices gone down since Katrina or have they gone back up since then?

Does anyone know much about the areas or decent places to stay there?

Gulf Shores is great. Why not Pensacola FL, right next door? It has a wider variety of lodging choices and prices, either on Pensacola Beach (on the barrier island) or in Pensacola (on terra ferma).

I don't know about the other options. I have just gone to the beach and to eat.

Or keep moving east, to Grayton Beach, Ft Walton Beach, Mexico Beach, Port St Joe etc etc.
Gorgeous beaches, and affordable.

You can request a information from the Gulf Shores website.

Years ago, I requested information online and was sent a magazine of hotels, motels, condos, houses etc. for rent, by the week usually, for every real estate company you can think of. They give you rates, amenities, comparisons...it's very helpful. It includes Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and everything in between.

Yes, Florida is also an option - like Destin - but I believe the Alabama coast is just as lovely in many ways.

OK...what's your point? If Alabama is too redneck for you, don't go. All the states are different see, and it's ok for AL to have it's own flavor. It still has some very nice beaches and accomodations.

Another +1 for Pensacola. That place is a ton of fun and beautiful. Gorgeous beaches, lots of fun bars and restaurants and a cool music scene.

The nice hotels at the beach start from $150 a night. You can go into a nice little motel at Pensacola beach for around $100 a night and there are motels in downtown Pensacola from $50 a night.

This is a nice little motel that's not that expensive: Pensacola beach hotel, find pensacola beach hotels, Pensacola beach motel, hotels on pensacola beach, Paradise Inn, Pensacola Beach, Florida

I had the time of my life over there and had nothing but positive experiences. It's really up to yourself what you make of it. If I want to, I can get annoyed about trivial things when I'm in a 5-star hotel. Everyone can.

What's your budget? We stayed pretty much every where from Ft. Morgan to Panama City, and my favorite is around the Destin/Santa Rosa area. Gulf Shores is beautiful and you won't be disappointed, but the Destin area is just a little bit nicer and the water a bit prettier. Okaloosa Island is a great choice, just over the bridge from Destin and quite a bit cheaper.
What month are you considering? What's your budget per night? How many people do you need to sleep? Do you have to be right on the beach or is across the street okay?
Give us some more details and I'm happy to give you more info as well as restaurant suggestions, etc.

Having been to Gulf Shores alot, and Pensaocola once, you will probably enjoy Pensacola a bit more like I did.
