I'd say the nearest decent one would probably be in New Mexico.

Closest by driving or flying? If driving, Taos, NM is around 900 miles away. There may be some others closer, but I don't think Houston is really "near" anything that I would consider much of a mountain.

If flying, you have too many options to list as Houston has some major airports available. Salt Lake City, Reno, Denver, etc. are all pretty convenient for some world-class skiing. It really becomes more of a question of what you are looking for at that point.

I think the resort areas of Colorado should all be pretty doable from your area, especially if flying. There are so many choices (about 2 dozen statewide) that making a selection could be difficult. I've flown from Houston, TX to Gunnison, CO on a ski trip a number of years ago. It was a package deal, and included bus transportation to Crested Butte resort, as well as lodging. Perhaps you could find something along those lines.

If you're driving, I think the previous posts about Taos, NM would put you closer to home, but with less of a selection of ski areas. According to my atlas, there are about 5 ski areas near Taos, with a few more near Santa Fe, NM. The closest area that I found was Cloudcroft Ski Area near Alamogordo, NM.
