Pretty cheap to get around Europe by train, too.

London to Paris is like $120 or so.

Getting good at racing sailboats worked for me, then being often margianly employed and remaining free to go on a moments notice. Kind of strange living in a tiny room eating Ramen one week all my possesions but my motorcycle fitting in a backpack and then being flown to Europe and put up in top hotels, restauraunts and all the next, but was a lot of fun.
After the event hitchhike around for a few weeks till totaly broke. Repeat untill falling in love and not returning home. Get kid.... start working for real.... Wating for Kid to be grown up then probably go nomadic again... repeat untill death.

If you want to travel well and not like you're staying in a college dorm, then you have to spend a little money.

I'm a student attending university at the moment and I will have to say that how I am able to travel so much is that I save the money that I receive from my banquet job, the financial grants that I receive from school, and not spend too much money on things that I don't need.

This means that I have no car( no need to spend money on auto maintenance, insurance, or gas) , no credit cards, no expensive phone bills, don't pay rent at home since I live with parents, don't buy too much clothes for myself, rarely spend money eating out( Plus it is not good for you to eat anyways) or going out with friends.

So far I have gone to 14 countries in the past three years and I don't regret one moment of the experiences that I had in those places and I still going to go no matter what.

It may seem crazy but I rather have memorable experiences traveling to different places rather then spend all of my spending money on things that I don't need or go to overpriced places to drink.

I was paid to go to about 20 countries. 8 years serving in the US Navy. Worked in the engine room of steam driven ships.
