I stay almost exclusively at Motel 6 and I've never experienced a problem. They are barebones motels, but I only go there to sleep.

All of the ones I've stayed at have been clean and safe. That's really all I care about when I'm traveling.

The last time I stayed in one a hooker was stabbed in the parking lot about 25 feet from my door. That was in 1989. Haven't stayed in one since, and would sleep in the car first. If it doesn't have an interior corridor, I won't stay there with a very few high end resorts as exceptions.

And were you, by any chance, trying to beat the system again and trying to bully the clerk into returning your money because you couldn't sleep?

Is that why he ended up being rude? And because he would not return your money, you are now trying to damage the motel by badmouthing them on a public forum and costing them business?

Is that the other side of this story?

Speaking of hotel experiences, I stayed at a fairly nice hotel in D.C. last year and at 12am, I woke up to the sound of a woman screaming in the room next to me and a thumping of a bed against a wall.

It lasted for a half hour, so I called the front desk and they sent someone up to tell them to stop. They did for a while, then about an hour or two later it started up again. I could tell they were black too, that is how clear their voices were through the wall.

Unfortunately high price doesn't necessarily mean you will get a better night's sleep.

Yes, there are. But the lower end the hotel, the more likely you are to have a meth lab blow up in the room next door, a dead hooker in front of your door, and a gang related shooting in the parking lot. Or all three. Before midnight.

My daughter and i booked a Motel 6 for two nights, only had outside rooms, we hardly slept as there was coming and going all night in the next room, knocking on the door male voices, I'm convinced it was being used for drugs. We didn't feel safe so checked out after one night. My advice is spend the extra $ go upmarket, and always go for inside rooms.

Generally, I don't mind. If I'm tired, I'm tired, and if I'm not (often the case as I suffer from insomnia), I have a "script" for Ambien, which makes me feel delightful and then puts me to sleep.

The continuous fan control mode should always be in the hands of the paying customer. period. I leave hotels feedback on this very item. Without this simple ability to control my air flow and background noise my sleep is materially effected, and after all that's a big part of what im paying for.

I often wonder if hotel management has ever slept in their own rooms. From crashingly loud metal door latchings to marketing material on every raised horizontal surface that you need to unpack your stuff on to, and the stobes of artificial light from devices inspired by clockwork orange fans--rooms can be a far cry from home sweet home.

Sure I carry earplugs, but I'd enjoy a good night's sleep without eye masks and foam crammed into my ears.

This is a 4 year old thread, but I can't sleep in a too quiet room, either. I am used to a box fan running nightly at home, so I use a white noise app on my smart phone when I travel. It has a setting that sounds like a fan as well as other choices like crickets, thunderstorm, crashing waves, etc. I can place it close to my pillow so it helps me sleep yet isn't so loud that my partner is kept awake by it. I don't need to pack anything extra as my phone is going with me anyway, and I use the app while my phone is plugged in so no battery drain. Problem solved!
