Age? Where have you been? What do THEY like?
We did Orlando, but ony Universal and Epcot / Disney when kids were young.
Older they liked the beach. Tampa was usually pretty EZ and cheap (since we flew in from west coast).
You should still be able to get decent airfares if you hunt them down. I see carriers offering last mintue deals to fill their flights. I flew 2000 miles for $38 last week with 2 days notice.
I stay in private guest homes... they are $20/ night world wide.
Works for me and my family... YMMV.
The kids always had a great time staying at farms with other kids (guest home directories have kids ages and interests and girl / boy). We spent a week riding horses on ranches in the west and the east. It was a decent vacation for under $100 for the whole family.
Ages 7 and 1.5. We are in NJ. Would like to find the nearest warm beach, or a winter destination with great views, snow tubing, good food, nice hotel (thinking maybe PA?). We don't want to travel too far (prefer to stay on the east coast).

Lake Placid, NY. It's a 5-6 hour drive (very easy one!) from NJ, and tons of winter stuff to do. The Crown Plaza is very kid friendly, there's also a Best Western that gets great reviews. Both would have rooms with breakfast included for under $250 which would leave you plenty for activities and other meals. Both have indoor pools as well.
I would avoid the Hilton and Mirror Lake Inn with kids that young, while they don't have age restrictions, they are not particularly child friendly.
