I don't think that Amtrak is any more expensive than any other method of travel. It's costs are in the time it takes. And if that's something someone doesn't want to (or can't) give up, it's not the method of travel for them.
You are home in your house--where you have fixed costs for housing whether you are there or not and inexpensive options to eat at home.

By the way, not all train stations offer free parking.

You can find a lot of accommodations around ABQ for much less than the cost of a room on a train.

I think that most people a week or so vacation and really don't want to spend half of their vacation getting to their final destination.

Sorry, but I would rather be sitting at the Frontier Cafe enjoying a couple carne adovado tacos and a bowl of posole than eating some prepackaged food on the rails in Western Texas.

The bedrooms on Amtrak cost much more than typical hotel stays.

I wanted to take Amtrak to Cleveland, price so high we decided on Greyhound, then ended up driving. I love the train, but ouch for their prices.

I have been wanting to try Amtrak on a couple of trips - Cincinnati and Central Nebraska. However, when the only trains arrive at 5:30 am and 2:45 am respectively, it doesn't work for me.

After riding on the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka and China's HSR from Shanghai to Fuzhou, compared to these very convenient HSR systems Amtrak is a slow ripoff.

Its severely neglected....does very well with what it gets....so you can't really call it a ripoff.

Amtrak gets a bed rap. We stick to coach and to trips of 48 hours or less. Great way to go!
