SoCal...after multiple visits to SF and Seattle, I was thinking I'd love to live on the West Coast. Then I visited LA in the summer. NEVER. AGAIN.
I've lived in LA for 18 years (originally from TN). I realize that the huge sprawl that is LA is not for everyone, but there are some beautiful areas in SoCal. I love the San Bernardino Mountains - love to go up to Big Bear Lake. Joshua Tree National Park is lovely but the desert isn't a good summer destination. San Diego is a really pretty city - on the water, plenty to see and do. And there's some great coastline between Santa Barbara the the Mexican border.
So you reject the whole West Coast because of a bad experience in Los Angeles? Actually the summer weather in Southern California is the best you will find anywhere in the country.
No, I'm just rejecting SoCal (specifically LA). Mainly due to the weather, which is a highly subjective thing. I actually love the weather in Seattle in the summer. Also, if I want to go to a city that is bigger than my own (Chicago), I would--like the OP--pick NYC too.
Las Vegas
Any place with snow involved. I don't get going to Colorado or Utah, etc skiing. I hate cold and hate snow and would never choose to vacation there.
