My brother reports that his flight was delayed for a few hours and he will be stranded this evening in Saint Louis because his connecting flight to his final destination will leave 45 minutes before his delayed flight arrives and there are no more flights to his final destination that evening.
Now he has to decide what to do:
1) Camp out in the airport for about 12 hours and try to sleep on the floor until the next connecting flight to his final destination (home) which leaves the next morning at about 10 AM
OR
2) Take a cab to the closest airport hotel and spend about $100 for a room
I thought that the airline with the delay (that caused him to miss his connection) would have to put him up at a hotel? (unless it's caused by weather or something completely beyond their control)
I would probably take a shuttle (not a cab) to the nearest hotel/motel and sleep in a bed. I would be annoyed if I had to pay for it myself, though.

The Airlines claim all delays are due to weather or air traffic control and if they are able to claim this they don't have to pay for a hotel.
absolutely no need to spend $100 on an airport hotel. have made last minute bookings at airport hotels close to a hundred times (LAX, SFO, SEA, YVR, LAS, PHX, DEN, ORD, DFW, ATL, MIA, FLL, BWI, BOS, etc).
go to priceline, bid $40-60 for a 3-4* hotel in the airport zone. pretty much always i will get a hotel. i just call them up, ask where the shuttle picks me up, and by the time i've smoked a few cigs the shuttle is there to take me to my hotel. usually get a really nice place for maybe $55 all in.
I once spent the night in the airport at Seattle. Got in about 11 pm and connected to a flight leaving at 6 am. All concession stands were closed. Tried sleeping but was not able to. Gave up trying to sleep about 3 am for fear I would not wake up in time and miss my connection. I was all but climbing the walls by the time we boarded the flight. Ever since I have made sure my layovers were long enough to go to the hotel for the night.
The airline has always paid for my hotel, even if weather was the cause of the delay. Unless this is a very recent change of policy or I just have not had the right airline/roll of dice where this did not happen.
Hotel, and yes the airline would pay, or I'd be cancelling any rewards program plus airline credit cards at the gate..in front of the manager I asked to speak to.
