Hubby and I after almost 7 years of not a single vaca are FINALLY able to take one next year. We're in Fla and have decided to do Cali. My brother lives in LA and we'd like to visit him, do San Diego etc etc. We've been saving our points up on our cards and we have enough to rent a car for free now for almost 2 weeks so we'll use that. We're planning on renting a condo/house for the trip and have found very decent ones for 70-100 a night. Our biggest expense will be the plane tickets. For myself hubby and daughter as of right now in April we're looking at almost $1,000 in tickets. Do the generally tend to go down the closer you get or is that a steal? Whens the ideal time to start looking at booking your tickets?
Rule of thumb, the tickets get more expensive closer to the date of departure.
Some of the airlines will show you a month's calender with the ticket prices for each day. Those prices will vary depending upon what day of the week you fly.

Not quite. Intercontinental long hauls tend to bottom out in the 6-12 week prior to departure date time frame. Domestic tickets vary, best bet is to track prices for the routes you fly the most often throughout the year to know what a good price is.
I'm with annerk: a $ Grand for 3 seats, RT is a good buy...waiting is a risk and may not allow for better pricing.
SB, if you haven't already, you should check RSW to ONT, SNA and LGB, in addition to LAX, though there may be risky/time consuming connections for those.
Have fun driving Southern Cal for a couple weeks...

3 transcon tickets for $1000 is not a bad buy. I've flown for less, but not by much.
