Driving from ATL to NYC on Friday, June 21. Anyone happen to be going that way? Any tips, comments? I will be taking i95 and plan to leave around 11:30am. I will be using the Waze app, and a radar detector.
I tried taking i-81 two weeks ago, but Garmin forced me to take i-95 even though I manually set the route to take 81. I think I'll write down the directions myself and force Garmin to recalculate once I actually am on 81. Thanks PDD.
I'm with PDD...we live in Western NC, about 2 hrs north of ATL, and have driven to the NY area literally hundreds of times in the past 12 years.
From ATL, I rec'd 85 to I-77 north, to I-81 North to I-78, east across Jersey to NYC or NY metro area.
Fwiw, GOOG Maps shows that route vs the 95 run as about the same time and miles, and unless one needs an I-95 slog through DC & Balt 'fix', I would take a Pasadena on the far right 95 run.
Watch for the Revenue Cops, esp in VA, (and keep you bird dog out of sight if you use it in VA).
Hope you have an EZPass: it will serve you well in metro NY/NJ...

Good question spinney. On my way to New York I will be doing 81 because I don't care about stopping, however, I am picking up the wife and I'm sure having clean/nice areas to stop will be better for her, so I may take 95S back down. I am heading out Friday morning to NY, then coming back down Sunday night.
If you're planning on leaving NYC on a Friday morning in the summer, and taking 95 to Atlanta, you may as well save yourself the time and trouble and just blow your brains out now.
You'll be hitting two rush hours, along with the regular weekend summertime getaway traffic along the seaboard.
Definitely take I-81 (specifically this). I'm from Atlanta and live in NYC now, and I'll never go back to 95. There's a toll roughly every 35 feet until you're south of DC, which only adds to the congestion.
Also, I usually leave around 9pm, and get there at about noon the following day. That way it doesn't feel like I've wasted a whole day traveling.
