you obviously do not rent cars very often. First of all, most of the time the rental company doesn't ask you how many miles you plan on putting on the car? Yes, there are a few companies that do limit miles, but very few. That used to be the policy, about 15 years ago, no more.
The ONLY time that I have been asked for the mileage I planned to incur was in SNA at Avis. They knew that I put 20k miles on a car in 4.5 months. There ONLY request was that I change cars once a month so that they knew the car had the proper service.
The only mileage restrictions these days fall into two categories. First, Enterprise RAC restricts you to 100 miles per day on their current $9.99 per weekend day promotion. Second, in some small markets like Rapid City, SD, all rentals came with a 150 per day limit.
I am taking a long road trip of about 5000 miles in a few weeks. My car is quite capable of making the trip as it is a newer model and reliable. However, I wonder if renting a car and putting all those miles on it instead of my own car might be a good idea, saving my car from racking up miles on it.
You can get specials, even on premium cars, for fairly cheap for a couple of weeks. What do you think about putting long miles on a rental instead of your own car?
I must be in the minority. I HATE driving rental cars. I'd rather drive my own car. I drive a lot and usually make several trips a year. On most of those trips I travel with three dogs and a parrot in the back seat. There's no way I'd rent a car for those trips.
I plan (hope) to keep my car for 10 years and drive the heck out of it. That's why I bought it. I still have my old car that's 14 years old and has 176K+ miles on it.
Drove from California to Virginia and back racking up 10,000 miles on my own car a few years ago. It was in my well maintained Ford Crown Victoria. Didn't see any need to spend additional money on a rental car.
unless you're mileage is restricted by a lease there's no point in my opinion because 5,000 miles isn't much mileage for a car.
example 2 cars, 1 with 20k miles and the other with 25k miles = no real difference between the two.
there are other factors though which make it maybe a good idea as in tire treadwear, brakes, rock chips, etc.
Seems awfully high depreciation for 1000 miles. Also, the older your car is, the less significant the depreciation due to mileage.
Using Kelley Blue Book, the difference between the book value of a 2012 Accord EX (common midsize sedan) with 10kmi and 11kmi is ~$70. The difference between a 2009 Accord EX with 48kmi and 49kmi is ~$50.
IMO, I'd rent a car for that long roadtrip just to have something different to drive.

good point and I agree, I was trying to be on the high side using typical lease overage charges per mile that's all.
personally I use my own car but I don't travel long distance much. I have on multiple occasions put 1k+ a week on my car though (a lot for me) and didn't think anything of it.
We bought a new car ( Toyota Camry) on the day I sold the dairy herd and retired.
From 2007-2012 we took lots of trips and racked up 124,000 in 5 years despite being retired.
A rental car never crossed my mind. However, I was surprised to learn how many friends and relatives do rent a car if the entire trip is over 1,000 miles.
The only time I ever rented a car was the time we flew from MN to Atlanta to check out Alabama for possible retirement.
Rented the car from Enterprise in Atlanta and spent 5 days touring Alabama.
We would have driven our car for entire trip ,but we were under a time constraint so we flew.
