How far would $25,000 USD get you in a place like Sao Paulo, Brazil?

Pretty damn far if you were going on a one week vacation.

Your post is too vague. What do you mean by "how far"? Do you want to vacation there for 2 weeks? Live there for 3 months? Stay at Marriott-type accommodations? 5 star hotels? Rent a mansion?

To me, $25, 000 = 8-10 month vacatuon. Not in a place like Sao Paulo obviously, which is expensive as fu~. But in the places I like to spend time $25,000 = 8-10 months.

My apologies for the lack of details. I'm planning on staying for about a year, renting a decent apartment, and doing much of my own cooking. I haven't been able to find any good conversion calculators for quality of life/purchasing power when comparing/converting USD to other countries. Current places I'm considering moving to would be Santiago Chile, Sydney Australia, or as stated above Sao Paulo Brazil. Thanks for the replies.

Well if you're just planning on existing then US$25,000 for a year is sufficient in Sao Paulo and Santiago. Not great money but not bad either. CoL calculators are useless. Just look at what your average expenses will be. Rent, Food, transpo, entertainment etc. Why those cities?

Thanks for the reply. Why not those cities? I'm leaning more towards Sydney, but ultimately, I'm looking to see a different part of the world and be around a different culture for a while. I'm also looking for a country that has proper GMO labeling, that's one of the many reasons Sydney is winning out. I would be looking to find a job and continue school during my stay. I wouldn't just be doing nothing.

Sydney is very expensive. I was shocked how much my one week trip there ran me. Little things like food and drink really add up. But I say do it anyway because Australia is awesome!

Frist of all, I don't think many of us here plan on spending a year, living in another country so it would be pretty hard for any of us to even venture a guess, but I can be relatively sure, $25,000 isn't going to keep you living any decent life in Sydney for a year. Sydney is very expensive.

Yeah have to agree with what others have said. $25k for Australia isn't enough. When I moved to Bangkok back in 2004 I had around US$35K savings. My plan was to stay in Asia permanently. Ran out of money after a year and a half and couldn't find any way to make enough money to fund my lifestyle in that time. Had the time of my life tho.
