We are driving from LA - Houston. We wanted to stop by at Grand Canyon to see the sun rise or sun set. What rout should we take? What are good places to stopover to stay in the motel in between LA-Houston.
there is a scenic train that goes from I40 (Williams, AZ) up to the GC. It takes about 7 hours total as I recall with about 3 hours at the canyon. Not a lot of time really but enough if you hadn't seen it before. You won't be there for the sunrise or sunset either. Time enough to hike a little, see some of the shops/museum and even have lunch or a cocktail at the El Tovar (?) Hotel out on the deck. Our train was actually robbed by a band of desperados on the way back.

I'd suggest taking I-40 to Flagstaff then up the scenic route #180 to the Grand Canyon So. Rim, or as suggested catch the sight seeing train at Williams up to the grand canyon..
Then return to Flagstaff and get on I-17 south to Phoenix, then merge onto I-10 down through Tucson and on to Texas and Houston. There are dozens of good motels along the way. I look for the AAA rated ones. You can't miss the motels as most are near the main roadways you'll be taking.
Like the previous answer you have I would say take 15 north to 40 East to Flagstaff, Az. Go to the south rim of the Grand Canyon and do your thing. After that return to Flagstaff and then hit the 17 south to Phoenix and pick up 10 headed east all the way to Houston.
Probably just what people are comfortable with when starting with the initial thought of LA to Houston .... just run I-10
Flagstaff is pretty much your hop on/hop off point for the grand canyon.
Working from there to Houston will provide a few options
The fastest is probably just staying on I-40, go through NM and then cut down 287 to 45 in TX to Houston going through Fort Worth
This could expose you to more winter weather along I-40 ... although probably the worst of it will typically be in Flagstaff which you'll be in one way or another
There is another route that would have you bail from I-40 before leaving NM and then cutting through TX avoiding major cities
Or the more scenic route of cutting down to US 60 in AZ and going through the White Mountains (I've been on that portion when trying to avoid weather in Flag coming back from Albuquerque) and then connect down to I-10
Or just run I-17 down through Phoenix and connect to I-10 .... this will probably provide the best weather option and keep you on an interstate the whole time, although maybe a little slower than some of the other options
