I'm with US Airways and just realized that I can only use miles to book round-trips just as I'm sitting on over 14k in points. Does anyone know if there are other big alliances that let you use one-way booking? You can technically fly one-way with US, but you have to use a round-trip's worth of award miles.
And for anyone else who doesn't have some sort of air miles account, get one. I waited too long to finally sign up and would otherwise be sitting on nearly enough to fly where ever I would like given the amount I've flown within the past three years - which isn't even that much.
American does, so you can just wait it out for the merger, and hopefully that option will still be there afterwards. United and Southwest do. Delta is phasing it in for 2015, though it's also making it harder to earn miles then.
On some routes, Delta does allow one ways, but at higher than 1/2 of the RT miles (but not as much as the RT). SW and I would assume Air Tran allow one ways for 1/2 of RT miles.
I've never seen a merger where you lose your miles. They merge your account into whatever the remaining airline is. In the case of USAir/American, you'll end up with an American miles account.
BTW, I'd expect that other airlines will be following Delta's lead of gifting miles based on dollars spent versus miles flown. SW started this years ago.
You'll keep your miles, but be aware there might be different expiration dates for miles in the new program. (If you don't want miles to expire, most airlines have an online shopping portal where you can buy like $10 from the iTunes store and extend your 'most recent activity' date and consequently the expiration date)

I have SouthWest rewards, and you can do one-way with theirs.
It's not an alliance thing, it's an airline thing. United allows one way reward travel, and they're *A as well.
