I have a couple days vacation coming up soon and am thinking of scheduling them off, then driving to the airport and going to a damn near random destination. Have you ever taken a spur of the moment trip (like a day or two thinking about it) and just gone for a weekend or so?

A few late/last-minute trips, but never gone to the airport without a destination and jumped on a random flight (although have dreamt about it at times!).

Lived in Colorado, flew to San Diego for a weekend on I think three days' notice.
Lived in Colorado, made a weekend trip to Dubrovnik on maybe 4-5 days' notice (I already had my flights to/from London booked for work; decided to squeeze in the Croatia trip)
Lived in London, decided on Wednesday night to go to Florence on Friday night.

I've had really last-minute work travel (e.g. "Hello, Fuzz? We need you to get to the airport now and get on the next flight to Toronto."), but I don't think those count since they were not voluntary.

You usually know where you are going when you head to the airport. Can't say it is too good an idea to buy a 'counter' ticket to a random place.

You can get on the Weds emails from airlines that show bargains for the following weekend. Got SFO to Tokyo for $399.

I game to go about anywhere, so I like the low fare bargains. I then rent a Hotwire car and stay in a hospitality guesthome ($10/ night worldwide). 20+ yrs

Flying is something I don't do spur of the moment. I have gone on a short road trip spur of the moment though.

Back when one could do that without all the security hassle and was able to get tickets at the counter without having to reserve them.

I've done that more than a few times and it was great.

No. I do get the emails from airlines showing weekly sales or whatever they call them. I do look at those and would consider a last minute trip if the price is right and it is someplace I want to go, but no, I would not show up to the airport and see who was flying where. Last minute ticket purchases at the counter cost a small fortune.

It's a romantic idea, but not practical because:
1.) You will pay outlandish prices for a ticket bought at the counter.
2.) Airlines usually fill up there flights days before the flight. Combine that with airlines hub/spoke system and you will have difficulty going anywhere exciting at all except to the airlines nearest hub airport.

Agree that signing up for the promo e-mails from every carrier serving your local airport is the way to go. It may not be as spontaneous to know where you're going 36 hours out from departure, but will probably be a lot more budget-friendly.

Must be nice to be able to do that by being born in a First World country. Impulsive international trips are absolutely out of the question for me. Because: visas.
