After coming to an end of a 4,500 mile road trip, I have wondered how much it costs a business to put their small sign on those big blue signs on the interstates: accommodations, fuel, food ? You see mostly the big chains but there are other independent merchants as well. I am wondering if anybody on CD has had experience in getting the state transportation department to post their sign on those big blue sign boards? They are sure helpful and they keep the big billboards at a minimum. Also, in so many places in the US, you can't see the business from the freeway anyway and those blue signs are very helpful. Thanks for any reponses.
Rogerven, I find this to be an interesting question - actually, one I would never have thought of.
Thanks for the link, wit-nit.
I didn't see a price for the Specific Information Signs (SIS). Did I miss it?
I was surprised (shocked, actually) that the cost for a tourist oriented directional sign (TODS) is so low - but I'm glad it is. I also find all of these signs helpful and love that they have made it possible to have fewer billboards.
I find them very helpful--usually. I have gotten off to find fuel and there have been no signs at the end of the ramp telling me which way to go, and no hint as to which direction civilization might be in. Very frustrating.

I find that frustrating too and I often travel with a friend who finds it extremely frustrating. He believes those signs should be there and I can count on a small rant from him whenever they aren't.
Fortunately, more and more we can get help from our mobile devices.
