Since C-D won't let me edit. I need to add that people will assume that because you hold a 1st-class rail pass, you DEMAND 1st-class cars. In some cases, they simply do not exist. Just make it clear that you need to get to Berlin or Venice or Rome and they'll get you there. Some trains require reservations even though you hold a rail pass. You do not want to get on one of these "reservations only" trains without reservations. Ask me how I know this.
I found it's best to just walk up to the empty first-class window and ask the bored ticket agent what needs to be done to get on the train to "fill-in-the-city."
And one other thing. The Rhine trip must be done on the slow train that hugs the river. Otherwise what is the point? I'm telling you, it's the most beautiful train trip on the planet.
