It isn't 10%, its a couple of bucks for a service worker, a low paid one. Maybe because I did such work I don't mind at all. It made a difference to me when I earned so little, and an extra bottle of water or extra coffee doesn't mean squat to me.
Its just about treating others as I would want to be treated.
Preach!
for a short period of time about four years ago, I had to clean rooms for a little bit. It's hard work! I lost 11 lbs during that time due to the hard work. Minimum wage and working long hours still barely allowed me to pay rent, eat, and pay auto insurance. I was grateful when people left $1, elated with a $5 tip, and hysterical when I got $20. I bought lunch, groceries, and gas with tips. So when I travel and stay at a hotel, I leave a couple of bucks. Housekeepers appreciate this, and they make your room extra tidy.
A nominal monetary tip just says, 'thank you, I appreciate the service you provided to me'. If you don't understand that, you're hopeless.
It says more than that. It also says, "I freakin' get it that you're in a messed up industry and don't make enough money to live. You did me a service and you should be paid for your work. I am SO sorry that society exploits you. This is my opportunity to partially make it right."

That just leads back to why not be tipping everyone that makes minimum wage.
Annerk, search is down right now but earlier you said if you weren't tipping, you'd be hiding your toothbrush.
That most definitely implies bribing and tipping to insure you'll get something you should already be getting without it.

I'd also say that if you need to keep track of your odometer if you valet a high end sports car. I'd also say that you need to track what was mailed to whom via the postage meter in the office if everyone has access to it around Christmas. There are some things that are just common sense.
