What size do you prefer for checked luggage? Does 29 wind up over the weight limit most of the time?
It depends on what you are packing in it. If it's a bunch of shoes, a bowling ball, and the collection of rocks you picked up in a random national forest, I'm sure it would be.
If it's full of feathers, probably not.
All that aside, I can't imagine what anyone would need with a 29" suitcase. I use a 20" and a cross body for all my travel--usually 2+ weeks at a time.

Depends on how good a packer you are. Because I am good at using space very efficiently, I can usually fit much more in a suitcase than many other people. Because of this, a 29" suitcase will almost always be over the weight limit. Someone who doesn't pack as well may not have that problem.
For that reason, I don't own a 29". I can fit quite a bit in a 25" ... though I haven't used mine in years. The last time I needed it was for an 8-week work assignment, and I was packing more than just clothing.
Size DOES mater. In addition to the weight restrictions, there are linear measurement maximums.
For checked bags, it does't so much. I've seen some pretty giant bags come out of those conveyer belts. Also those military duffles, which are usually quite large.

Carry ons have a strict size requirement, though

Your husband flies the plane, he doesn't load the baggage.
Bags belonging to military traveling on orders have different rules assigned to them.
Calm down lol....it's just baggage
We just returned from a trip back east and we were concerned about the weight of one of our bags....and whether you know this or not, pilots are supposed be aware their airline's policies. I consider him a valuable resource of information...especially when traveling.
Plus you can check just about anything if you're willing to pay for it.

Bags larger than the 62 linear inches are allowed, but with a fee.
The fee for oversize is more than the fee for checking an extra bag usually.
