I just received my third new passport. I renew it within weeks of its expiration date. I was impressed with how quickly I got it back (inside three weeks). However, this time, they did not return back to me my previous passport book and I was looking forward to receiving it - like I did for the one that expired in 2004. I guess I just wanted to keep it as a souvenir since I visited some pretty cool places and I wanted to keep it as part of my travel memories.

My question is, have the rules changed since 2004 that the US gov't doesn't return back to you the canceled passport? I just received my new passport and nothing else. As you know, you have to surrender the expired book when you submit your renewal application and payment, but I expected to have it returned to me just like the passport I used from 1994-2004.

Anyone else experienced this?

Unless it was damaged, it will be returned. You'll get it separately (like they've done for the past 10 years or so) a week or two after the new passport arrives.

Nope, it wasn't damaged. So great, I'll look out for it. Thanks!

and back in 2004, I got the new and old passport together.

It changed in 2005-ish, whenever they began to do the new passports with the RFID chips embedded into them.

I renewed mine right before Thanksgiving. Like the OP, I received my new passport a few weeks later. My old passport was returned seperately about a week after that.

Note, I did not pay for any expedited service.

I got my old one back before I got the new one this last time I renewed. I ended up throwing my expired one in the shredder (even though the old stamps were interesting) since I was afraid I would end up grabbing the old one by mistake, LOL

I keep my old one in an envelope in another envelope with various personal documents in the safe while the current one sits on the top shelf in the safe. Pretty foolproof.

Or put a couple of pieces of masking tape across the cover of the old one and write- EXPIRED- DO NOT USE on top of the tape.

It just seems wrong to throw away something attached to such interesting memories.
