Hate them but we are doing one this spring from NJ to Matlacha Fl for two weeks.
Driving because flying is a huge hassle anymore and now with the price of gas we can do it, even stopping one night on way down and back, cheaper than air for two and car rental for almost two weeks....
My longest trip was 2500 miles when I moved back to Alaska. It was spread out over 4 days. I did do a 3000 mile trip but it was spread out over 11 days. I still love to drive but I am finding that I am usually ready to call it a day after 250 to 300 miles.
I love road trips, but not "hurry up" road trips. If it is all about the destination, then no wonder many hate these things. If it is all about the journey and what you get to see and learn along the way, then I find it a superior way to travel over the airlines. Pays to be organized about your trip as well.
I've seen so much of this country, all 50 states, and if it's brand new territory I've never seen before, I'm more game, but any repeat scenery, forget it!
There's only one part of this last trip that wasn't boring, from Holbrook to Globe, one stretch of AZ I had not seen before, but all the rest of it I had seen before, twice over, which was a chore!
I don't like driving for more than an hour and I am not a big fan of long car trips. Sitting in the confining box moving at high speed, staring at one place for hour at a time is not very pleasant. Unfortunately in the US, this is often the most economical way to travel though far from pleasant. We are forced to drive for long distances when we go skiing. Any other way to travel will unfortunately be prohibitively expensive. The drive is long and tiring and is usually done in the evening to save time.
The longest car trip I have done is 6 hours, with a second driver. I think anything above 3 hours is too much for me, especially if you are on the highway with absolutely nothing to see.
Ooh! If you could only travel on highways like the Autobahn in Germany, wouldn't that be sweet!
They've clocked drivers on the Autobahn as high as 160-170MPH, that would put me in Phoenix in a little less than 2 hours! I'd probably still complain, but not as much!

I have driven in Germany and vast majority of drivers don't drive close to that speed. It tends to be a bit faster than in the US but even without much traffic most would drive below 120mph, more likely 90-100mph on the fast lane.

Our road trips growing up were all about the destination. Now mine are about the journey.
We love road trips! So, I doubt you'll ever hear me saying I had enough.
