Going on vacation for my father's 70th birthday. Will be myself, my sister (both young adults) and my two parents.

We were initially considering Spain/Portugal, but have decided against it.

Now we are considering going back to Hawaii (we first went to Maui about 4 years ago and liked it).

We've been to most places in the US and may Caribbean islands. I am out of ideas.

What we like:
beach/relaxation
culture
activities
nature
some shopping, nightlife, restaurants, etc.

Any thoughts?

Two questions:

1. What time of year do you plan to travel?
2. Why did you reject Spain and Portugal?

8 - 10 nights is a long time to be in one place. One suggestion I can offer is a cruise, either the Mediterranean or Scandinavia. Those locations are interesting and seem to meet your criteria.

I would think Portugal would be a really good option (I've been doing research for a possible trip next year).

Costa Rica might be an option as well, though the culture/shopping aspects might be lower than you're looking for.

beginning of august

the planning became kind of complicated and we feel we might not have enough time now to appropriately plan

In Europe, you can also consider Southern France, Croatia, Southern Italy for a beach vacation with some sightseeing. There are also I think some Spanish Islands, such as Malaga? All of these are doable in 8-10 nights though two weeks would be ideal.

In the US, you have probably been to Florida. What about Florida Keys, I've heard these are beautiful. Also, Canadian Thousand Islands area in St Lawrence river is absolutely gorgeous. Not sure if there is any sight seeing opportunities.

Best of luck in your planning and please let us know what you decide.

Where are you coming from? Presumably you don't want to waste days traveling. How about budget?

Top of the head, three days in Vancouver then a 7-day round trip cruise to southeast Alaska. Culture, food, activities in town, nature, scenery, relaxation on the ship. Unpack once for the cruise, get a balcony cabin, and you've got a very affordable and very comfortable waterfront hotel room, with decent food and free room service, and the view changes every minute.

Beach, not so much, but the boat has plenty of places to hang out and catch rays.

Keep in mind that many cities in Europe effectively close down in August as that is the traditional vacation month--and the beach resorts are packed.

If you're coming from the east coast, Hawaii is way farther than Europe, and (speaking for myself) August in Hawaii is too hot and humid for my tastes; YMMV.

Maybe look for a VRBO or similar in Santa Barbara, or somewhere in San Diego County? Like this one on Mission Bay in SD? Or this one in Santa Barbara?

How about the Azores? There are direct flights from BOS that are only about four hours. The dollar is super strong against the Euro right now, so you'd be able to get a lot of bang for your money. They have everything you want from laid back warm beaches to sightseeing, culture history, and clubbing. They are very safe.
