Also remember that dogs aren't always welcome at National Parks.

How about 700 caves and no crowds (all in one spot!) I enjoyed these, tho small and lots of them! (see the nearby Petroglyphs. Don't miss Lassen NP and nearby Lake Alminor. Bring home some of the Sugar Cones (pine cones the size of footballs!) There are PLENTY!!!! everywhere. including dropping on YOU!
Lava Beds National Monument (U.S. National Park Service)

also nearby...
Oregon Caves National Monument & Preserve (U.S. National Park Service)

Near St Helens (Cougar, WA)
Monkeying Around the Ape Caves - Down the Tubes in the Shadow of Mount St. Helens | GORP.com

and many MANY more....

Do get a sunset picture from Hug Point, OR (near Cannon Beach) (caverns and colorful rocks / sediment / wind sculpted erosion. + blasted road (stage coach / beach access on the early West Coast Hwy 1... The stagestops used were shipwrecks at low tide!)

If you stop in Colorado springs you can take the train up to the top of Pike's Peak and also visit Royal Gorge which isn't far away. Yellowstone is a super park to visit.

Is the trailer a camper or a cargo U-Haul type? Does the truck have a transmission cooler separate from the radiator? Coolers are far cheaper than transmission overhauls and you can get them installed at your convenience and preferred location.

The trailer is actually gonna be a horse trailer that we are using as a u-haul. Its waterproof and lockable with a gooseneck hitch. The truck does not have a seperate cooler. My husband has had many motifications done to the truck though. (he used to haul dozers and other heavy equipment wirh it as a sude job).

Excellent advice!

If you have an automatic transmission
(I hope not if he has been tugging dozers around...)

Get a fan assist tranny cooler (~$300) and install a tranny temp Gauge. Use synthetic fluids for better heat stability (less chance of lubricant failing due to 'burnt' heat breakdown.)

install new coolant hoses and belts and haul along an extra water pump and fuel pump for critical spare parts.

If you get to the Royal Gorge... swing by Juana Hot Springs for a relaxing evening, and then see Black Canyon of the Gunnison.
