I stayed at the Golden Nugget about 4 years ago for business. The hotel had been remodeled, but the noise from the plumbing and those heavy room doors slamming shut didn't provide a very good sleeping environment. I agree that the Fremont Street Experience (broken link) is worth seeing.

We just got back from Las Vegas and stayed at "The Hotel @ Mandalay Bay." The room and service were outstanding. Would highly recommend them. Don't know what your price range is but they were very competitive.

For those of you that traveled to Vegas could you tell me what you think is a "fair" price to pay per night at the hotels taking into consideration it's March and it would be 2 nights more than likely Wednesday and Thursday?

Wanted to add - Since we'll be out the majority of the time I don't want to spend a ridiculous amount just to sleep! As long as the place is clean I'm happy.

Thank you

If you want cheap check out the Motel 6 right off the strip. It is right around the corner from the MGM Grand (on E Tropicana Ave I believe). Its a fairly short walk from everything, but don't do it in the summer as 110+ weather can make a 5 minute walk feel brutal.

If you want to stay on the strip and avoid taxis then there are some you could do that would not be as "high priced". Check out all of them though as you can still get some GREAT deals even on the high end ones. Since your only going to be there 2 nights you don't want to spend all of your time having to get taxi's to and from the strip. If your on the strip you can walk to ANYTHING or ride the bus for like $2 that goes up and down the street. Try these hotels:
MGM
Flamingo Hilton (known several that have stayed there and liked it. They have some great shops and their casino offers classes on the different games).
Treasure Island (even if you don't stay here you MUST catch the show out front)
Luxor
New York, New York
Mirage
Even Ceasers will offer some good deals. MUST see The Forum Mall here!

Next to the MGM is the Coke-Cola and M&M stores. So cool for us big kids.

Downtown at Freemont is Golden Nugget and I've known several and that is where they stay. You will want to go see the light show though sometime. Totally cool.

Las Vegas is THE BEST people watching place in the world. OMYGOSH!!! I will stay up all night long in the casino just playing blackjack and people watching. The later it gets the better and more interesting it gets. PURE entertainment and almost free.

I have been to Vegas in March for a convention of sorts. I was told by the person who organized the trip that March is the busiest month in Vegas for conventions and that it is harder to get a good deal during that month. I don't know if that is true or not but it might explain why rates are higher.

There is so much to do and see. During my last visit, we rented a car for the day and headed off to Lake Mead and did a boat tour. We also drove to Red Rock Canyon and did the driving tour ourselves. Then we went to the Red Rock Casino. It is very nice and we did well at the slots! We signed up for their card and got $2 off of the buffet which was excellent! We met locals from Vegas and they said that most locals do their gambling off of the strip and named the Orleans. They were the ones to tell us about the food at the Red Rock. I am thinking it is about a 20 minute ride from the strip.

Have fun. Gotta love Vegas.
