I second that.. I am going again in a little more than a month, it is awesome (although way pricier than Mexico)

Thanks luzianne. Even though I don't need advice, others who are thinking of going here may. My roommate and I wanted to do the pirate dinner cruise but funds were a little tight.

Would love to try Costa Rica! It's definitely on the bucket list.

Advice for Cancun? Go and see the city. Cancun is one of the nicest cities in Mexico, in the central business district. Nicely laid out neighborhoods with parks and little marketplaces and tree-lined streets, just a block or two off the main drag. Safe and friendly and welcoming. They are delighted to see and meet visitors who are willing to experience Mexico and not just hang out in the beach compounds.

The only thing I find more expensive is the car rental. Eat in local sodas most of the time...cheap! The hotels are cheaper if you don't go all inclusive. Costa Rica has few all inclusives.

Lots of free hiking and waterfalls to visit.

As for the cancun/Mayan riviera area, there are still some pyramids you can climb. Ek Balam and Coba are great. You can also visit Tulum and snorkel for free at the beach there. Stunning.
