I'm curious to know what is the best overall place you've visited, looking at factors such as the quality and diversity of historical attractions, natural beauty, food, climate, friendliness of locals, etc. The one vacation or the few vacations that stand out in your mind and bring back the warmest memories. It's very subjective but I thought a fun topic to discuss. I think my top 3 in no particular order are:

Iceland - other worldly and amazing natural beauty, incredible seafood, and the friendliest locals I've ever met.

Istanbul, Turkey - outstanding historical attractions combined with a mix of Middle Eastern and European cultures.

County Clare and County Kerry, Ireland - completely fell in love with the depth and breadth of historical attractions (castles, beehive huts, stone circles, etc.) combined with natural beauty (Cliffs of Moher, Dingle Peninsula, Killarney National Park) and the people were wonderful.

Honorable mention to Big Sur, California; Venice, Italy; and Banff National Park, Canada. Would love to hear from others.

We have been lucky enough to have done quite a bit of travel, but many have traveled more than us, that is for sure. I don't think I can actually say "the best" there are too many things to consider, but I guess Poland was our favorite. We love the people, the scenery, the site seeing and the overall history even though some of it wasn't wonderful, it was something we all need to remember and be thankful we live in America.

Our second favorite place would be Hong Kong. No, I would call it beautiful except at the top of the peak, but it is diverse, fun, busy, lots of good food and at one time the best shopping in the world, probably.

Closer to home I would say the eastern part of Canada and the New England states. We loved the eastern part of Canada, as well as Bar Harbor Maine, Newport R.I and other cities and towns in the vacinity. We also love upstate New York during the fall color changing season.

This is just for starters, there are so many wonderful places throughout the world and so many true beautiful natural sites to see.

For natural scenery, I would go with the Galapagos Islands.

All wonderful places - Galapagos is at the top of my bucket list, and I'm also very interested in Maine and eastern Canada. Newport is wonderful as is upstate NY in the fall.

Best place I EVER visited?? The Scrub Cays, without question!!

[vimeo]106638814[/vimeo]
https://vimeo.com/106638814

This almost totally unknown string of sandbars in the Central Bahamas, is about 30 miles west of the Exuma Chain, and 70 miles south of Nassau.

One word to describe this place???

OTHERWORLDLY!

A place that is not only completely untouched, but is off of almost every travelers radar screen

Thailand is probably my favorite. Great food, cheapish prices, beautiful beaches, lots of nightlife, plenty of other backpackers from all over the planet.

Ecuador also rates highly with me. Unique culture, compact and easy to travel around, you can be in the mountains in the morning and the jungle in the evening.
