I know it adds miles but the thought of I 95 from Jersey to Richmond makes me twitch just thinking about it. It's not too awful once you get south of Richmond.
I agree, as a former NJ resident and NJTP hater I avoid the NJTP at all costs. I don't care if I 81 south adds 100 miles to your Florida N-S trip. The Turnpike turns good drivers into bad drivers just being on that road.
However in the winter months I would stay off of I 81 since the posibility of bad road conditions caused by weather is more probable. You have to deal with the Blue Ridge mtns.
Like some have suggested I 81 to I 77 and I 26 seems like a decent route from NJ toFla.
If you're not in a hurry exit I 81 in Roanoke Va NC 220 to I 74 to I 95 At South of the Border SC. This will take about 4 hrs.
Hello
Could someone please advise me?
What's the shortest possible way to get
to South Florida from
Front Royal
Virginia. If any one has a short cut please
let me know. I need to
go but I'm not looking forward to the drive.
Fredericksburg/Richmond/Petersburg is the worst section of 95.
Both directions are closed daily due to accidents, bad driving and volume, often around the Doswell exit (Kings Dominion).
I'd suggest 17 to Rt 1 at Fredericksburg. Rt. 1 runs from Canada to Key West. Long stretches of it go through the countryside.
There are traffic lights and small towns here and there but it beats sitting on the interstate for hours while accidents are cleared from the highway.
Route 1 was designed in its day to be the main East Coast north/South highway, many people drove it to Florida for years. There are lots of restaurants, gas stations and hotels along the way.
It's mellow safe and not crowded with a lot less headaches and horror stories.
Why not just take I-95 to I-295 (the bypass around richmond) ? When I-295 ends, there is I-81 (and I-95) right there!
That is not I-81. That is I-85. Big difference. I-81 goes from WV down through the Virginia Shenandoah Valley to Tennessee. I-81 does not go anywhere near Richmond. I-85 starts just south of Richmond.
Yes, I-81 and I-95 are different, and which one to choose depends on what is important. I-81 has fewer lanes on average than I-95 and more trucks than cars, but I-95 is much more congested in the DC area and as far south as Fredericksburg. Below Fredericksburg not so bad.
I prefer I-81. Then to I-77 and I-26 back to I-95. For me more relaxing than I-95.
Some my kids frequently drive from the DC area down to Richmond. They never go I-95. They much prefer US-15 and US-522.
And when I head up to MD and beyond, I avoid the DC area completely, either by taking I-81 if I am heading to Pittsburgh, or US-301 if I am heading for NYC.
I recommend skipping as much of I-95 as possible. I agree with Upminster-1.
Take I-81 to I-77.
Take I-77 to I-26.
[ NOTE: If it's getting crowded around Charlotte, exit I-77 and take I-485 Outer to bypass Charlotte. You'll rejoin I-77 south of Charlotte. Continue I-77 to I-26 by Columbia SC]
Take I-26 to I-95.
This connects with I-95 just southeast of Orangeburg SC.
We drive from Atlanta to family in Boston several times a year for the past decade. I-81 is so much better than 95. If you are heading to Florida stay on 81 to I75. If you are going to the Carolinas get off at I-77 and drop down to Charlotte NC.

Answer to a more recent post!
I hate to say it but Front Royal is pretty close to I95 so that's really the fastest way. But it shouldn't be that bad if you time it right as you'd be past the traffic heading into DC if you leave after the morning rush.
Leave at 9 AM ish and you'll miss the I95 DC traffic as well as Richmond's afternoon rush and should glide right through. Stay the night around Santee SC which is about halfway and then leave in the morning after 8 so you'll miss the Savannah, Brunswick and Jacksonville rush hours.
Sorry, but you aren't avoiding any traffic on I95 once you get past Stuart, FL and get to the Palm Beach area. It just plain SUCKS!
If you want to go straight through and don't mind nighttime? Think about leaving after DC's rush, say 8PM ish but expect some traffic as you near Savannah, Brunswick, and/or Jacksonville as you'll pass those cities in the morning rush!
As far as 95 south from where you are. It's really not the road that sucks, it's the timing of the drive as you approach the assorted cities along the way!
