If I decide to use 81 part of the way to FL to avoid MD,DC and most of VA what road do I need to get on to cut over to 95 below Richmond?
You can take 64 East in Virginia and catch 95 a bit south of Richmond................we have taken 81 to 77 into Charlotte NC and then into SC picking up 26 east which dumps you on I-95.
We travel back and fourth up to New England and it is a crap shot taking 95 through VA and DC, you need fast pass to get into the commuter lanes now.
My wife does not like 81.................but guess who is driving. She also doesn't like how bad it is gotten on I-95. I relented and let her talk me into I-95 up to Richmond and then cross over after Richmond.........wrong. We were in 35 MPH traffic 30 miles south of Richmond.
I have tried several times, and would recommend, US Highway 17 from Winchester / Strasburg VA to Fredericksburg VA.
Coming south on I-81, at Strasburg VA, you take exit 300 East onto I-66 toward Washington DC..... 15+ minutes later, take exit 28 onto US 17 around the Warrenton bypass, then to Fredericksburg. You will have several traffic lights just at the outskirts of Fredericksburg where you then turn onto I-95 south.
Or, you can save just a few miles by exiting I-81 at Winchester at exit 313 east, US Route 50. Continue to Paris, VA (just after the crest of the hill) and turn right onto US Route 17 there. The next 8 miles are a low-speed limit zone, but are exceptionally scenic, and go past a winery, before increasing speed again and on to I-95 at Fredericksburg.
Also, be advised that I-81 has TWICE the ratio of tractor-trailers. as most other interstates do.

Good luck
I know!! Just did that trip twice in 4 months. VA and MD were horrible, totally stopped at points.
We usually stop in Fayettville NC or Florence SC.
So I can get 64 right off 81 and it will take me to 95?
Thats what I want 95 somewhere between Richmond and Petersburg.
I would take I81 to I77 and then take I26 to I95 Stay off I95 most of the way.
I81, I77, I26 are nice interstates with out the craziness of i95.
