Can we share our travel budget?
We set aside 15 thousand. Some years we exceed and some years we come under. Since we have retired we travel more and our expense is up as well, and also our style. We do more guided tours, we have done a few Road Scholars trips.
I include everything in this budget - all expenses from start date to finish, pause air fares booked in advance, even when we visit grand kids.
We have done 3 trips so far and I feel done for now for the next 6 months.
How about your experience?
My last 6-seek trip to central Eurasia cost under $2,500. I'm working out a plan for my winter trip to Sri Lanka, Australia and Cambodia, probably four weeks and also under $2,500. That's for one person, which doubled would be under $10,000, for two separate trips virtually around the world, ten weeks. I think in June, I can do another month back to Kyrgyzstan for under $1,500. Looks like RT on Aeroflot will be about $960 from Houston.
About 75% of that on plane fares, 25% on the ground.
I don't have many of those $10,000 bills in my sock drawer, but not many years left to travel, either.
I am single, so I only need to budget for myself, fortunately. I would estimate I spend US$50,000/year on travel related expenses. Mostly partying. Not into guided tours, or backpacking, or resorts, or any of that silly crap.
There's nothing on that list that describes us. We typically take one longer and two shorter trips per year. Three out of five years we go someplace like Europe or South America. On the off years we go someplace domestic--maybe a beach house rental, maybe a road trip, maybe wine country, could be any number of things.
If I added up all our travel expenses for the past five years and divided by five, it would work out to about $15K a year. But some years it's around $5K while others it could be $20.
Less than $5000 a year for sure. I usually take two trips in 12 months. One being a few weeks, the other being a month or longer. On that budget, I can travel pretty well anywhere on earth that I want to no problem. The biggest expense is airfare, always.
From this year forward I'm trying to cut down my trips to one two-monther per year. Budget should now be about $3000 max.
This doesn't include regional travel, by the way. Several times a year I end up in Toronto or Ottawa, or maybe Montreal, along with smaller more nearby little day trips like Manitoulin Island. The cost is usually tiny.
I set a goal and then save what I need before we take the trip. We go somewhere every year, but every month I put away what I can to pay for that year's trips (we often add a smaller road trip).
We go to New Orleans every other year, so next year I'll have what we need saved up for it. With dilligent airfare scruitiny, plus modest accommodations, app $3500 covers it for the whole trip.
I am also saving for a Palm Springs trip coming up, of which I've been saving for awhile. After that I'll put more away for New Orleans.
It's a bit of a strain on my budget to do this, but I totally HATE paying for a vacation after it's over.
I suppose, all in all, annual trips for us can average out to $5000, depending on where we're going that year. We don't do exotic trips.
