One night on the ferry Barcelona-Ibiza
and then maybe 12 hours sailing off French Atlantic coast
made a lot of shorter ferry trips (Newhaven - Dieppe, Mass Mainland-Marthas' vineyard, NL Mainland-Texel island, Venice-****, Croatia-on hydrofoil-, Madeira-Porto Santo, Malaga-Tangier, Thailand mainland-Koh Lanta, in the Philippines). Never longer than a couple of hours .

Lived on a ship for a couple of years in the Navy. Passage from Gibraltar to Charleston SC took about 3 weeks.

Several days when I went on Mediterranean trip on cargo ship , and when I went on north Africa trip, again on cargo ship. (Love cargo ships, and would never go on any of the humongous/obnoxious cruise ships)
The trips were several weeks long, but I don't remember the exact number of days between the stops.

This being the Travel Forum, you might take the hint that it refers to people "traveling", as opposed to working at sea.

They work AND travel. Visiting foreign ports of call is actually a big recruiting tool for the navy. What you think the navy builds ships so that they stay in dock for 6 months? Of course they travel.

You remember the cynical saying:

"Join the Navy (or Army)!
See the world!
Meet interesting and exciting people!

and kill them."
