For me, there is nothing like getting into a car early in the morning or emerging from a train station into a bustling plaza, knowing the whole day ahead of you is a totally blank slate, everything you experience will be new and fresh. Even if you have plans, or an itinerary, or somewhere you have to be at the end of the day, there's still that moment when it feels like everything is entirely in the hands of serendipity, and it's the most exhilarating feeling.
You get off the bus/train all tired lugging backpack, check in to where you're staying, get organized, then head out to explore the area. That is what I like best. Walking walking finding where you might eat breakfast tomorrow, where you might have a beer or five that evening, stumbling upon a park where the locals are hanging out and kids are playing, finding a temple/church, finding a river, seeing a bird you don't have back home, etc.
Being away from where I normally am. Using traveling as a spiritual and emotional escape, and doing it through geographical distance from what could be considered home, routine life and normalcy.
I use to be a FOH sound engineer for touring bands when I was younger and spent 28 months on the road at one point spread out over five tours. Literally lived on tour buses and in hotel rooms the entire time and never felt more free in my life. I was escaping and running from what I lacked the ability to deal with, which was myself. I thought if I kept moving, being distracted and didn't stop that I would never have to face my fears, imperfections and flaws.
