Have some time off in mid October, Narrowed down my choices to Colorado, Portland, San Diego, Portland.

Depends what kind of activities you like.
I think you WANT to go to Portland (listed twice)
San Diego is in California...

How would we know what you want to do with your vacation time? These are all completely different destinations. Further, the you listed California twice in your poll and Portland twice in your post.

I just visited both Portland and San Diego this past August. I liked both places but I enjoyed Portland more as I found the scenery around the city to be more varied than in San Diego.

If I had four days, I'd just go to Portland and laze around, drinking beers and coffee. It's not enough time, in my opinion, to get very ambitious about seeing and doing a lot of things, and San Diego sounds boring in comparison. California and Colorado are entire states.

I'd probably choose San Diego. There is easily enough things to do and see to occupy four days. You could spend a whole day alone at the zoo.
